Low back pain & sciatica

Back pain often starts outside your back.

When the hips are stiff, the pelvis is poorly controlled or the upper back won't move, the low back makes up the difference, thousands of times a day. In our experience, that's how much of the back pain and sciatica we see develops. We correct the whole chain, not just the spot that hurts.

What you feel

The symptoms

  • Aching or stiffness in the low back
  • Pain after sitting, bending, or lifting
  • Pain, burning, or tingling down the leg (sciatica)
  • Morning stiffness that eases as you move
  • Back 'going out' again and again
What’s usually driving it

The hidden causes

  • Stiff hips forcing the low back to overwork
  • Poor pelvic and core control
  • Sitting for long periods
  • Upper-back stiffness
  • Nerve restrictions along the leg
How we treat it

Our plan

  • Assessment of spine, pelvis, hips, and feet together
  • Hands-on correction of joint and nerve restrictions
  • Core and hip control training
  • Safe lifting, sitting, and sleeping strategies
  • A progressive plan back to full activity
  • A home program and tune-up plan to keep the gains you've made

The principleStop the hips, pelvis, and upper back from handing their job to the low back, and the low back finally gets a break.

The chain

Above and below low back pain & sciatica.

Your body moves as one connected chain, from the ankle and foot to the cervical spine. Red marks the link that usually ends up working too hard; blue marks the links we most often find stiff.

See a doctor first if you have:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or saddle area
  • Leg weakness that is getting worse
  • Back pain with fever, or unexplained weight loss
  • A history of cancer with new back pain
  • Back pain after a significant fall or accident

For a medical emergency, call 911.

Do I need an MRI first?

Usually not. Many people with back pain improve with the right treatment without imaging. If your evaluation shows you need imaging or a physician visit, we'll tell you.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica describes pain, tingling, or numbness that travels down the leg along the sciatic nerve. It's a symptom, and the cause can be in the back, pelvis, or hip.

Will I need to keep coming back?

Not forever. Once the chain is corrected and your body knows what normal feels like, most people simply come in for occasional check-ups and tune-ups to catch small problems early.
